IMPOSTER SYNDROME
Tania Carr Transformational Coaching
A lot of us experience this, but not a lot of us know the term – IMPOSTER SYNDROME. And when I say a lot of us, what I mean is that research shows that 70 percent of the population experiences impostor syndrome.
I like to describe impostor syndrome as the negative voice in our head that keep us from reaching our full potential and letting our light shine. In fact, its number one goal is to turn off our light. To keep us from making a positive impact in this world.
Sometimes it tells us we’re not good enough, or that other people are already doing a better job at that than you, so what’s the point. Ouch!
I’ve held some really pivotal executive roles throughout my career, and believe me when I say I experienced imposter syndrome all too often.
Some of the stories I kept telling myself;
- You’re not smart enough, you left school at 15.
- You were a runaway with no formal qualifications – you’re not going anywhere in life.
You were a teen mum, what have you got to offer anyone, you’re damaged goods. - You’re a fraud, who the hell are you to be running a multi million dollar business.
I could go on for days with all the negative self talk that went on in my head. Man, this was the story of my life, I kept waiting for someone to find out my background and tell me I was an imposter!
Man, this was the story of my life, I kept waiting for someone to find out my background and tell me I was an imposter!
What if I told you, there is a way to break through, that there is a way that you can actually change the narrative…
- It’s a pattern in your thinking – It’s okay if you hear the “mean girls” in your head, because it’s just a story, a story you keep telling yourself. The thing is, those negative feelings are always going to rise up, it’s a pattern in your thinking.
- Let the feelings rise up – It’s about letting the feelings rise up, acknowledging the feeling, and just doing it anyway.
You are never going to stop the feelings from making a grand appearance, BUT you can let the feelings rise up and acknowledge that they are there. - Acknowledge that they are there – “You’re not good enough”, “what are you thinking”, “they are better than you”, “what have you got to offer”…..all lies that you are so used to telling yourself.
Then say to yourself out loud – “thank you for that running commentary, but I’m not going to allow you to get the better of me, I’m not going to allow you to dictate to me anymore” - JUST DO IT – and then you just do it anyway, and it proves you CAN DO IT! You already knew you were capable, you just needed a reminder!
And then you celebrate your wins!
My favourite thing to say to myself at the moment “Cool story bro, that’s all it is A STORY and you have the power to change the narrative!” and then I have a little laugh out loud to myself.
I also use this strategy with clients too…
If your friend was talking negative self talk about herself, what would you tell her? Now tell that to yourself!
Read books, listen to podcasts, do some meditation, all this will help you with changing that negative self talk into positive reinforcing messages.
Remember you have the power to change the story you keep telling yourself.
You CAN follow through on all the things that are destined to make you great.
You CAN dream all the dreams that are destined to make you happy.
You’ve got this!
You are unique.
You are MORE than good enough.
You are strong, you are powerful.
You were created for a purpose.
You are capable of giving love and capable of receiving love.
You CAN and you WILL live the life you love.
